In Orwell's prescient novel 1984 the Big Brother torturer could manage to get the hero to say that four fingers being held up were actually five. Today we do not even need the torture. The activists have come so far that our clueless leaders have hopped on board without even putting up a fight. Every moronic and anti-reality bit of nonsense the militants throw our way, the authorities and politicians cheerily acquiesce to.

The images are hideous, revolting, grotesque and almost entirely fraudulent. 'There is not the slightest proof that either the plain packaging or the concealed displays have reduced smoking in this country, still less the hilarious photographs of very ill and unhappy people which now, by law, must adorn every packet,' writes Rod Liddle in the Spectator.

Suffrage was followed by a series of what we would now call "culture wars" over birth control laws, censorship of pornography, marriage across ethnic lines, Alfred Kinsey's sex research, and sex education in schools.
