Uganda Archbishop urges cooperation between political and religious leaders

KAMPALA (June 26, 2006)--The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Henry Luke Orombi has called for mutual support and cooperation between political and religious leaders as one way of bringing about development in Africa.

Orombi was speaking during a dinner President Yoweri Museveni and his wife, Mrs. Janet Museveni hosted for Anglican Archbishops who have been in Uganda at State House in Nakasero, Kampala.

Archbishop Orombi noted that cooperation between the state and the Church in Africa will ensure development.

He said that African Archbishops under their organization, the Council of Anglican Bishops of Africa, are struggling to strengthen Church work in Africa including fighting against HIV/AIDS scourge.

Orombi said that they are devoted to the promotion of education, good leadership, evangelism and development. He commended President Museveni and his government for the prevailing freedom of worship in Uganda and the support to the Church over time

According to a State House Statement issued today, President Museveni appreciated the contribution of the Church to the growth and development of Uganda in particular and the African continent in general.

He said that the work of the Church in education, health and other areas has complimented efforts of political leaders in the stimulation of the development of the African continent.

The President said that the strategic challenges facing the African continent include lack of a common recognized ideology to be followed by African leaders and people as well as the political balkanization of the continent.

He called for the support of the Church and other religious bodies in efforts geared towards uniting the African continent and stressed that it is only a united Africa that can guarantee the good future of Africans.

The President and the Archbishops also shared experiences on a number of issues of importance to the African continent where Mr. Museveni noted that religious leaders have strong and positive developmental issues about Africa.

He said that forums such as theirs are important in an attempt to address the challenges of the African continent.
