The Muslim Council of Britain backed the archbishop's outburst, but the Foreign Office issued a rebuke, insisting that Christian suffering in the Middle East was due to intolerant extremists opposed to democracy.

The Potomac Falls Episcopal Church is a daughter church of historic The Falls Church, where George Washington once worshipped. Currently, the parish holds Sunday services at Horizon Elementary School in Cascades, according to its rector, the Reverend Jack Grubbs.

The five-year-old parish is small. Grubbs said the final tally Dec. 16 was 54 congregants in favor of severing, and five opposed, with three eligible voters not taking part in the vote.
