ABUJA - The President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Revd. Peter Akinola, has described Nigerian politicians as political opportunists who are not worth dying for and as such do not deserve confidence and mandate of Nigerians.
"They are at it again. No clear political manifesto, clear vision or set goals have been announced. For goodness sake, what do we owe these shameless political opportunists? People who ordinarily ought to be languishing in jail. It is time we told them to go back to the farm or find something else to do. The current political climate portends enough danger for our nation's future. Nigeria deserves better than these evil men can offer."
Most Revd. Akinola who is also Bishop of Abuja Diocese speaking at the opening of Second Session of the Sixth Synod of the diocese at the All Saints' Cathedral Church,Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, also condemned the third term agenda saying, "the Nigerian story is hardly any more amusing. At a time when many thought we are becoming politically matured and our hard earned nascent democracy was being strengthened, then suddenly came the political permutation and campaign for a third term; which simply means the elongation of tenure of the present administration".
According to him, "we have been experimenting with different political styles. We were under the colonial yoke. At independence, we adopted the British parliamentary form of government. We have had several military dictatorships with some of them collaborating with civilian political opportunists. Then we moved on to try the American type of presidential system with constitutional provision for two terms of office for elected leaders".
The CAN President who noted that the campaign has been so intense that the whole nation is gripped by its fever said, "Politicians and non-politicians alike are taking seemingly irreconcilable hard positions. It is even being said that many other aspects of government business are now grounded, and of course the media is agog with practically no other story", adding, "these perilous times call for restraint and extreme care".
