Episcopalians to U.K. for damage control
LONDON, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- The head of the Episcopal Church left for London suddenly Wednesday to do damage control among his global counterparts as they prepare to ostracize him.
Ostensibly leaving to preach Sunday in a British church, Frank Griswold's most urgent concern is supporting four other U.S. Episcopalian bishops who left for London Tuesday to slow the global momentum for rebuking the gay and lesbian advocacy of the Episcopalian Church, as the U.S. branch of the 77-million member Anglican communion is known, the Telegraph reported.
The recommendation to sanction Griswold and his colleagues is set to be made next week, but not revealed publicly until October.
Adding to the pressure on Griswold and the hierarchy of the Episcopalian Church, Queen Elizabeth II has told the head of the worldwide Anglican communion, Rowan Williams, she will not tolerate the 2.3 million-member Episcopalian Church splitting the Anglican communion over its gay and lesbian agenda, said David Virtue, a conservative analyst of the church.
Buckingham Palace declined to confirm or deny that report.
"Panic has set in," said David Virtue, who runs the religion news Web site Virtuosity.com. "Griswold is there to do damage control."
