Archbishop Welby has been under pressure to say sorry following the publication of an independent report which concluded Bishop Bell's reputation had been wrongly destroyed.

Senior academics had written an open letter to the Telegraph complaining that the archbishop had shamed his office with "irresponsible and dangerous" claims that Bishop Bell may have been a paedophile.

Lay and clergy delegates of the diocese approved a resolution Saturday afternoon to send that message to the triennial General Convention, the Episcopal Church's governing body that is meeting in July in Austin, Texas. It was approved nearly unanimously during the diocese's Annual Convention at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Murfreesboro.

A damning report found late last year that the Church of England unnecessarily besmirched the character of Bishop Bell when they publicly named him in an apology made to the accuser in 2015.

The signatories to the letter, seen by the Daily Telegraph, now call on Archbishop Welby to retract comments he made in the wake of the report in which he said that a "significant cloud is left over his name".

He takes over from Archbishop Onesphore Rwaje who has been at the helm for the last seven years. Bishop Mbanda currently serves as Bishop of Shyira Diocese.

A source intimated to KT Press that Dr. Laurent Mbanda, was overwhelmingly voted through secret ballot. House of Bishops meeting took place on January 17.

Three candidates were vying for this position including; Bishop Alex Birindabagabo of Gahini Diocese and Bishop Dr. Jered Kalimba of Shyogwe Diocese.

The soldier is in the South Sudan army and remains at large, Yugusuk said, free to continue raping women.

'The woman was threatened by gun. The husband was also threatened. One soldier raped the woman. The woman is now in the hospital. She has been in a critical situation,' he told South Sudan in Focus.

It comes after President Salva Kiir ordered the defence minister and the army's chief of staff to execute soldiers who commit rape or murder.

The two candidates, The Rev. Michael Williams and The Rev. Mark Nordstrom, had been nominated by the Special Jurisdiction of the Armed Forces and Chaplaincy and this month were brought before the College for election. After a time of prayer and through the direction of the Holy Spirit, the College elected both candidates.

Both Rev. Williams and Rev. Nordstrom were senior officers in their respective military branches where they served throughout their adult lives until retirement.
