Methodism, now a predominantly liberal denomination, draws none of the Biblical distinctions between gender roles in the life of the Church. Their views were already reflected in the Rochester Report and in talks about possible unity they have already stated that they would expect all roles to be open to men and women. Whilst the fact of Bishops has been more problematic it looks likely that they will be willing to swallow this as well.

His statement is coming on the heels of the election by the Church of England of John Sentamu, a Ugandan as Archbishop of York. Abp. Sentamu is Church of England's first black Archbishop. "The office of the Archbishop of Canterbury is so much tied-up with the politics of Britain," Archbishop Gitari said.

"According to the unwritten constitution of England, the ABC is the sixth person in succession to the King of England."

The Virginia diocese's resolution, passed in the closing minutes of its annual council at the Richmond Marriott, promised to "seek the highest degree of communion possible" with Christians with whom it disagrees.

The diocese's 90,000 members, it said, "would make every effort to cooperate as co-laborers within the Anglican Communion," the 70-million-member body to which the Episcopal Church belongs.
