The conflict has simmered since 2003, when Smith was among the bishops who voted to confirm the Rev. V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire to be the church's first openly gay bishop. Though homosexuality is accepted by many Episcopalians, the church has not officially permitted the ordination of non-celibate gays and lesbians or the blessing of gay unions.

All six priests now under threat openly disagreed with Smith on the issue and asked him to name another bishop to minister to them.

Morgan accused the Church members of being unable to hold a civilised debate among themselves and gave a stark warning to the Church not to be drawn into a "theological rant" or to throw "verbal grenades" at one another.

It is thought that much of the speech came as a lead up to the meeting
of the Anglican Consultative Council in two months time when the issue

Bishop Andrew Smith has repudiated the faith he swore to at his consecration when he voted against Resolution B001 at General Convention in 2003. Bishop Robinson told The Union Leader:

"We have absolutely no indication of Jesus' sexual orientation. Absolutely none. Therefore, it would be totally inappropriate for me to speculate about it."

April 08 2005 By virtueonline NIGERIA: Archbishop Announces formation of Anglican Church in North America

It is well known that many Nigerian Anglicans who live in the North America are no longer able to worship in an Anglican church, some have drifted to other churches, and others have even given up the faith. I well remember one woman coming to me during one of my visits and, with tears, saying she could no longer worship in an ECUSA church and that her whole family no longer had a church home, yet they would prefer to remain faithful Anglicans. In saying this she spoke for many others.
