Spread out your Word before me
And teach me line by line.
That I may believe sincerely
My inward part refine.
Open your Word unto me
That I may probe its depth,
And drenched in perfect Wisdom
Survey its length and breadth.
Reveal your choicest secrets
That in Jesus are disclosed,
Your promises and precepts
Through which we are disposed
To earnestly yearn for you,
To seek and to discover
That you alone - alone - are True,
And of this quest the Mover.
For in all our soul's much doing
To find this sweet attachment
'Tis due to your strong wooing
That we succumb to you enchantment.
Your song in human hearts
Is irresistibly alluring,
And firm resolve imparts
To make love's tryst enduring.
Your beauty fascinates forever,
Disclosed in your dear Son.
We are inclined to leave you never,
Nor from your side to run.
Spread out your word before me
And make its message plain,
That I your natural en'my
May bond with you again.
May I this Advent season
Prove your coming to be true,
Forsake my act of treason,
And come, enthralled, to you.
Collect for the second Sunday in Advent
Blessed Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience, and comfort of thy holy Word , we may embrace, and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
