Attention was inevitably focused, however, on the three-day meeting's three hours devoted to resolutions - many of which dealt, at least indirectly, with the church's position on sexual issues.

In an emotional speech following the defeat of a resolution of which he was a principal author, Carter Brothers stood up to say "I am embarrassed by this council," and indicated he was reconsidering his church membership.

February 07 2005 By virtueonline EXETER: Extreme secularism threatens society, warns C of E bishop

"Secularism really ought to stand for, and indeed did once stand for, the creation and preservation of an open, public space in our society where none are privileged and all may be heard. Yet under the banner of political correctness and a spurious multi-faith, multicultural agenda, there is a danger that only one voice is allowed to be heard."

Bishops in Africa and Asia spearheaded the opposition, and African churches threatened to end all links with Western colleagues, including financial ones.

Asked if the conservative provincial leaders are united as they prepare for their meeting in Northern Ireland, Archbishop Gomez said, "I think we are united in the sense that we maintain our position. We will be calling for the adoption of the Windsor Report and asking for compliance."

February 04 2005 By virtueonline REFORM IRELAND BLASTS GRISWOLD'S BELFAST INVITATION TO SPEAK

This consecration proceeded despite the assurance given by primates in October 2003 that no such action would be taken. Bishop Griswold is on record as saying that he 'regrets the consequences of the actions in other parts of the world but he does not regret the action itself.' That is like saying you regret that someone died because you pulled the trigger of a gun but you do not regret pulling the trigger itself. There seems to be a clear contradiction in his statement.
