Bishop Fred Henry, in his recent pastoral letter on homosexuality, openly recognized that the purpose of the “gay marriage” push is the destruction of the traditional family and of any religious opposition. Bishop Henry wrote, “The goal (of changing the definition of marriage) is to acquire a powerful psychological weapon to change society’s rejection of homosexual activity and lifestyle into gradual, even if reluctant, acceptance.”

Unless the Americans show some willingness to suspend homosexual ordinations and same-sex blessings, conservative bishops say a showdown is expected next month at a gathering of the world's Anglican archbishops in Ulster, Northern Ireland.

In a letter dated Jan. 4, Central Florida Bishop John Howe told fellow bishops there would be a "pastoral disaster" in the church if bishops come up with "an unclear or ambiguous response" to the report.

The issue of assisted euthanasia was reignited last week when Brian Blackburn, a retired policeman who killed his terminally ill wife in a suicide pact, received a nine-month suspended sentence at the Old Bailey. The court was told that Blackburn's wife, Margaret, 62, had just weeks to live and had asked her husband to cut her wrists.

"With much disappointment and sadness, (the parishioners) reached the decision that there was just not a critical mass of people to really make a viable go of it as a congregation," said Robinson in an interview Wednesday. "Perhaps it was time to rest."

The church will remain open until April, with the final service to be held Easter Sunday.
