"I am a follower of Jesus," replied Bishop Michael Curry, 62, the Episcopal Church's newly elected first black Presiding Bishop, who was overwhelmingly chosen by 121 bishops on the first ballot in a landslide vote by the church's 174 bishops. He will be the 27th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church.

The new leader succeeds the first woman Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, who will complete her nine-year term on Nov. 1. The Episcopal Church claims 2,009,084 baptized members with an Average Sunday Attendance of 657,102.

The Episcopal Church is a member of the 77-million strong Anglican Communion a global body of churches led by the archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby with roots in the Church of England.

Above all there is no shame; it has been turned into capital, because it is like money on the ground. We Americans who are orthodox are made to feel shame for not buying into it. Anybody can manipulate us now, it is the tail wagging the dog. There is no antidote for shame because there is no sacrifice for shame, no antidote for guilt. We are lost and with the Supreme Court decision to force gay marriage on America we will, like Rome, continue our decline and ultimate fall.

Our prophetic boldness consists in sticking a finger in the eye of fellow Episcopalians, sometimes a few, sometimes many. We risk the wrath of a local congregation or even a whole Diocese, each with no more power to retaliate than to overrule a national court.

The Anglican Communion is a healthy alive organism that has the capacity to heal itself, said the bishop. Pressed by this reporter he said, "We have had no discussion about the tears in the Anglican Communion. We had discussions with other members of the Communion about ways we are moving forward. We did not discuss this [broken communion] and we welcomed delegates and friends from other parts of the Communion," he added.

"We are sitting here on the edge of a desert where death is ever present," she said, "Many died by violence before the trek to this oasis began, and others were murdered or died of disease and exposure as they sought their destiny even farther west."

Jefferts Schori then gave examples of suffering and death in the today's world, beginning with the recent killings in Charleston, South Carolina, and ending with a 90-year-old Brazilian priestess who died of a heart attack.

"The church isn't the only segment of our society that's reeling right now," stated Jennings, "Our cities are besieged by gun violence and racial injustice, and too many young black men are caught in the school-to-prison pipeline." Jennings went on to say that the Episcopal Church is complicit in this, "We did not do enough to right the wrongs of discrimination, white privilege, and inequality in the world around us. This summer, especially, we must repent of that."

The resolution is being presented at the 2015 General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Salt Lake City, as part of its social justice advocacy policy that aims to build relationships with African Anglican scholars and activists who are working to advance "generous understandings" of the Bible that affirm the dignity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people.
