Pope Francis visited Uganda from 27th -- 28th November 2015 as one of three countries during his first visit to the continent of Africa. Pilgrimage to the sites of Christian martyrdom from 1885 to 1886 was a major focus for the Pope's visit to Uganda. Forty-five of the forty-six martyrs on 3rd June 1886 were killed at the site of the Anglican shrine.

Now, locked doors and for-sale signs have spurred part of the congregation to turn their angst into action. They have formed a nonprofit, hired an attorney, and are raising money to buy back St. Paul's and begin anew.

"They took away what was ours and what we had been managing for 180-odd years," said Geoff Pigman, chairman of the congregation's executive committee, whose ancestor preached at St. Paul's in the mid-19th century. "We are still very much committed to this place."

Apparently the cost was too great and its core values were not enough to keep the church doors open. Its clergy includes Rev. Rae Fletcher, the Rev. Deacon Judy Castle and the Rev. Canon Dr. Doug Leighton.

The congregation began in 1870 as St George's. It changed its name in 1873 to Memorial Church in memory of the first Bishop of Huron, Benjamin Cronyn (1802-1871).In 1955, the parish adopted the name Bishop Cronyn.

The elected church leadership also said it hopes to erect a memorial to honor slaves in Richmond, especially slaves who were members of St. Paul's Episcopal.

"While the Vestry does not believe that St. Paul's should attempt to remove all symbols reflecting St. Paul's past during the Civil War, the Vestry is united in agreement that it is not appropriate to display the Confederate battle flag in the church," a church statement said.

The dispute resulted in violence across the church in Zimbabwe with Kunonga later establishing a rival (Anglican church) and forcibly seizing control of various properties.

A Supreme Court ruling five years later ended the chaos, ordering Kunonga to vacate the properties.

However, Anglican church lawyers, in the latest case, said Kunonga sold, a huge loss, shares in various companies.
