Sewanee has allowed commitment ceremonies for unmarried same-sex couples since 2012, though none has yet taken place. However, university officials felt uneasy about providing the ceremony to an already married same-sex couple, a scenario they hadn't anticipated two years ago when only a half dozen states and the District of Columbia allowed gay marriage. Since then, 13 more states have joined the list.

Partridge was in the process of being ordained as a priest when he told his bishop, The Rt. Rev. M. Thomas Shaw, that he was transitioning from female to male in 2001. Shaw supported his decision and has gone on to become a dedicated advocate for trans issues within the diocese of Massachusetts. Boston's Cathedral Church of St. Paul now hosts a memorial on the annual International Transgender Day of Remembrance, to mourn those who have died because they were trans.

We have been assisted by Professor Jim Turrell, whose expertise in the field of liturgics has led to the crafting of a liturgy to be used specifically in those cases where a same-sex couple has already had a civil marriage. As a result, the request to confer a blessing in All Saints’ Chapel has been granted.
